Woodward Dream Cruise 2027: Date, Route and Tips
Most car events ask you to buy a ticket and follow a schedule. The Woodward Dream Cruise asks you to find a spot along Woodward Avenue and watch the cars go by, or to join them. It is one of the great rolling car events in the country, and it takes over a stretch of Metro Detroit for a day.
When is it? The Dream Cruise is held on the third Saturday in August. If that pattern holds, the 2027 cruise falls on Saturday, August 21, 2027. That date follows from the pattern, but at time of writing the organiser's website showed only the 2026 date (Saturday, August 15, 2026, 9:00 am to 9:00 pm) and had not posted 2027. So treat August 21 as the expected date, not an announced one, and confirm on woodwarddreamcruise.com once the organisers publish it.
Where is it? Along Woodward Avenue, from Ferndale to Pontiac, in Michigan. The organiser's site lists the participating communities as Ferndale, Pleasant Ridge, Huntington Woods, Royal Oak, Berkley, Birmingham, Bloomfield Hills, Bloomfield Township, Pontiac and Oakland County. The route map and the Directions and Parking page on the organiser's site are the places to check for current details.
A little history. According to a history of the event drawn from organiser materials, the first cruise was held on August 19, 1995. It began as a fundraiser for a children's soccer field in Ferndale, and organisers expected far fewer people than turned up. It has since grown into a very large annual event. News coverage in 2018 put it at about 1.5 million people and 40,000 vehicles in a typical year; those are estimates reported then, not figures for 2027.
Who does it suit? Anyone who enjoys cars in motion. Muscle cars, hot rods, classics, trucks and modern performance cars all join in, so the mix is wide. You can take part by driving your own car, or you can be a spectator, setting up a chair along the roadside and watching. Many visitors make a weekend of it.
How should you plan? Think about two things: where you will watch from, and how you will get around. Roads along the route are busy, and traffic and parking in the participating communities are limited, so read the official directions and parking page before you go. If you plan to drive your own car, decide in advance where you will park, and plan how you will get back out. Book lodging early, since the whole region is busy that weekend. Ask your hotel about shuttles or walking routes to the cruise.
Tips for first-timers. Bring a folding chair, sunscreen and water, and arrive early to claim a spot. Pick a community along the route and stay within it, instead of trying to cover the whole route. Be patient with traffic, and do not leave valuables in a parked car. If you drive in the cruise, give your car a good check beforehand, because a long day of slow traffic is hard on cooling systems and brakes. Think about what you want from the day before you choose a spot. If you want to see the widest variety, a position near the middle of the route gives you a steady stream of cars. If you prefer a calmer day with room to talk to owners, look at the smaller communities along the route, where the atmosphere can be more relaxed. Many people pick a spot, set up chairs and let the cars come to them. Keep in mind that the event lasts all day, so plan food, shade and breaks, and agree a meeting point if you are with a group, since phone signal can be poor in a large crowd.
