Dash cards: choosing a layout, preparing logos and printing cleanly

Car Show Expert fills in each dash card for you. What you control is the layout, the logos on it and how it is printed. Get those three right once and every card in the batch comes out sharp. This guide gives the sizes the cards actually use, so you can prepare logos that print well instead of guessing.

Choose a layout

Open your show, click Edit, and find the Dash Card Layout card. Click a layout to select it. It saves straight away. Every layout is available on every show.

Classic · A5 portrait, 148 × 210 mm

Logo, show name, date and venue in the header. Car number (68 pt), class, entrant, vehicle, QR code. Biggest sponsor logos.

Number First · A5 portrait, 148 × 210 mm

Logo and show name only in the header. Car number fills the middle (130 pt) with the class badge under it. Entrant, vehicle and QR code at the bottom.

Landscape · A4 landscape, 297 × 210 mm

Number, class, entrant and vehicle on the left. QR code and title sponsors in a right-hand column. No venue.

Minimal · A5 portrait, 148 × 210 mm

Slim header with logo, show name and date. Number and QR code, then entrant, vehicle and class. Venue at the bottom.

If you are unsure, use Classic. Choose Number First when people read the number from a distance, and Landscape for a card that stands on a table. In every layout, an entry with a vehicle photo gets the photo in the leftover space, cropped to fit. Long names are cut off with an ellipsis, so keep your show name short enough to sit beside the logo.

US Letter paper: the portrait layouts are A5 and Landscape is A4. Landscape is 17.6 mm wider than Letter (297 mm against 279.4 mm), so on Letter it needs about 94% scaling. Test print before a batch.

Prepare your show logo

Upload it on Edit Show, in the Show Logo card. The system accepts PNG, JPEG, WebP or SVG up to 2 MB. It does not check the pixel size, so a small file is accepted and prints soft. Your organisation logo from Homepage Branding is separate and does not print on dash cards.

The logo is scaled to fit a small box in the header, without cropping or stretching. These are the largest sizes it can print:

LayoutLargest logo when printedPixels needed at 300 dpi
Classic19 × 12.7 mm225 × 150
Number First21 × 10.6 mm250 × 125
Landscape14.8 × 10.6 mm175 × 125
Minimal14.8 × 8.5 mm175 × 100

Because the box is limited in width, a long one-line wordmark prints short. A logo four times wider than it is tall prints about 19 × 4.8 mm in Classic, whatever its pixel size.

Our recommendations, which are advice and not rules the system enforces:

  • Use a square to 3:2 logo. A stacked or badge-style logo fills the box.
  • Crop tight. Empty margin around the logo is wasted in a box this small.
  • Upload 600 px wide or more. That covers every layout at 300 dpi.
  • Use a transparent PNG or an SVG, in the dark or full-colour version. Cards print on white, so a white or pale logo disappears.

Set up sponsors and know how many fit

Sponsor management needs an Expert show. Add each sponsor under Sponsors in the sidebar, upload its logo (same file types and 2 MB limit), then open the show's Sponsors tab. Under Add from library, click a sponsor's name to add it as a supporting sponsor, or click Title beside it to add it as a title sponsor. You can switch tiers later with Promote to Title or Move to Supporting.

Title sponsors print one per row under "Presented by", with the biggest logos. Supporting sponsors print as a smaller row beneath. Within a tier they run alphabetically, and a sponsor with no logo prints its name as text. Logos shrink as you add more:

LayoutTitle logo heightSupporting logo (height × width)
Classic26.5 mm for one, 19 mm each for two, 16 mm for three, 12 mm for fourup to 16 × 42 mm
Number First and Minimal12.7 mm each for one or two, 12 mm for three, 9 mm for fourup to 9.5 × 29 mm
Landscape21 mm each for one or two, 17.5 mm for three, 13 mm for fourup to 11.6 × 40 mm

Supporting logos also get narrower as you add more, down to about 17 to 26 mm wide at five. There is no limit on how many sponsors you can add and the card does not warn you. We recommend one or two title sponsors and no more than four or five supporting sponsors, and we have not tested far beyond that. For crisp printing at 300 dpi, supply title logos at least 1000 px wide and supporting logos at least 500 px wide, cropped tight. These numbers are our advice, worked out from the largest sizes above.

Preview before you print

Click Preview under any layout on Edit Show. It shows your real show name, logo, date, venue and sponsors on a made-up entry (number 42, James Mitchell, 1969 Chevrolet Camaro Z/28). With no sponsors added yet, grey placeholders show where they will go. Click Use this layout to select it.

The preview does not show a vehicle photo, a long name or a four-digit number, its QR code is a sample, and it has no print button. For a true check, test print a real card.

Print settings and a test print

On the show's Registrations tab, click Print Dash Cards, tick the entries and print. For one card, click the printer icon on the entry's row. When the print page's button stops saying "Preparing…", your browser's print window opens. Set it like this:

  • Paper size: A5 for Classic, Number First and Minimal. A4 for Landscape.
  • Scale: 100%. Do not use Fit to page or Shrink to fit.
  • Margins: None or Default. The card asks for no margin.
  • Headers and footers: off.
  • Background graphics: on.

Use thick paper or card stock if you can. The QR code image loads from an outside service, so print while online and check that every QR code appears. If you only have A4 or Letter paper, keep scale at 100% and trim the card out yourself. There are no cut marks, and we have not verified where each browser places an A5 card on a larger sheet, so test first.

To test print, pick an existing entry (ideally one with a long name or a photo), print its card, and check that logos are sharp and nothing is cut off, the number reads from a few metres away, and, on an Expert show, a phone scan of the QR code opens that car's page. Repeat after any change to the layout, logo or sponsors.

Printing blank cards in advance for walk-ins? They use the layout, logo and sponsors as they are when you print, so settle those first. See Pre-printing blank dash cards in the manual.

When a custom template is worth it

On a Pro plan you can upload your own HTML dash card, which replaces the built-in layouts. It is worth the effort only when you need something they cannot do, such as exact logo placement, a sponsor's brand rules or a different card size. If the template cannot be loaded when you print, the built-in layout prints instead, with no warning, so test print after every upload. See Custom dash card templates for merge tags and an example.

Before you print the batch

  • Pick one layout on Edit Show and check it with Preview.
  • Upload a tightly cropped, dark or full-colour show logo, 600 px wide or more.
  • Give title sponsors a logo at least 1000 px wide and supporting sponsors at least 500 px wide.
  • Keep to one or two title sponsors and four or five supporting sponsors.
  • Print at 100% scale, on the right paper size, with background graphics on and headers and footers off.
  • Test print one real card after any change, and scan the QR code on an Expert show.
